Chang began dancing at an early age. After graduating from the dance program at Nan Jung High School, he was admitted to the Department of Dance at Taipei National University of Arts (TNUA) – widely known as the “cradle of performing artists” in Taiwan. Born with extreme nearsightedness, Chang has received multiple surgeries. Frequent dancing caused him to develop retinopathy and eventual loss of sight in his right eye, forcing him to suspend his studies and return to his hometown for rehab. However, Chang did not give up any chance to stay connected with dancing. He went back to his childhood dance program in Chaozhou Township (Pingtung, Taiwan) and started as a low-end staff member. Given his artistic talent, it did not take long for him to return to the stage and win dance competitions. One of them was the National Student Dance Competition – an annual contest which starts with preliminaries at the county level and sees 90 to 120 teams compete for the final trophy through several knockout rounds. Chang’s team represented some of the brightest young dancers from southern Taiwan. They grabbed the championship title in the Competition’s Modern Dance category with convincing results and even garnered the Best Choreography award for multiple years. No longer seeing himself “stranded” at home, Chang has turned his dance passion into more concrete action.
Winning in competitions did not make him complacent. His dream of having his own dance troupe started to take shape. With over 10 years of experience in the bag, a creative brain and remarkable self-discipline, Chang has successfully transitioned from a pure performer to an acclaimed artistic director and choreographer.
